Hermoine
Bell-E-Acres Alpacas & Services
Mark and I bought our first two alpacas in April,
2004. Herevia and Hermoine were two older
pregnant females with tons of maternal experience
between them and the attitude to go with it. They
were both Bolivian imports and had never even been
halter-trained. It didn't take them long, however, to
accept us as the caring hands that feed them.
Hermoine produced our first cria, a female, before
they even arrived at our farm. She was named
Genevieve after Mark's mother, in honor of the
unswerving support she gave us when we uprooted
ourselves from northern Virginia to make the move to
South Carolina with the primary purpose of starting in
on the alpaca breeding business.
Shortly after that, Herevia gave birth to Jasmine,
who is without doubt our sweetest girl. She is a
favorite with visitors and school groups that come to
learn about alpacas. Her curiosity and gentle nosiness
has everyone eating out of her hands in no time at all-
or is that really the other way around?
Mark and I had a year to learn about raising and
taking care of these wonderful animals before the
next couple of cria came along. We were fortunate to
have an opportunity to bring Abbondanza's Sekon to
our farm for rebreeding purposes so we could learn
about how that goes. Other fun lessons included
vaccinations, toe nail clipping, and certainly the joys of
shearing!
In the fall of 2005 first Sensation and then our first
boy, Bandit were born. Sensation, out of Hermoine,
was tangled up inside her mom, and Mark had to
physically assist in the birthing process as there
wasn't time to wait for a vet to arrive. Hence the
name of our third female cria. How lucky we were but
nonetheless, we rejoiced in welcoming Bandit, who
arrived without fanfare but simply stole into the
world in the wee hours of the morning.
Our small herd of alpacas is growing. We now have to
start paying stud fees...and do...but realize we need to
have a male or two on hand. In the summer of 2006
we were pleased to bring Ozzy and Rubio to
Bell-E-Acres. We expect great things out of these
two boys.
