When Mark and I purchased our initial two pregnant alpacas, the
previous owners were kind enough to send along some bags of their fleece.
I was eager to try to do something with this fleece and did not yet have a
spinning wheel.  I read up on the uses of fleece and learned about felting.  I
cleaned my first bit of alpaca fleece with a dog comb, placed it on a piece
of bubble wrap, sprinkled it with liquid soap and warm water and patted and
rubbed away.  I actually made felt!

Admittedly, those first attempts at felting did not turn out perfectly.  All the
same, I began reading more about felting both on-line and by checking
books out of the library.  I tried more of the suggested projects following the
steps outlined by felting experts and found that often I was successful, at
least to some degree!

Then I learned about needlefelting.  I ordered a kit on-line and that is
when I really became hooked on felting.  What a wonderful, versatile
medium!  It is possible to actually sculpt alpaca fiber using the felting
needles, which are thin, sharp and notched at the tips.  I've been having so
much fun trying any number of projects and have found this to be an
incredibly relaxing activity as well.
